Flight Instruction
The Livermore Flying Electrons (LFE) has QUALIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTORS to help you get started and working towards your "proficient flight status", improve your flying skills, or aerobatics. Primary flight training - learning how to control and maneuver the aircraft through all the phases of flight - is a structured activity. We have adopted the Flight Training Syllabus developed by Pongo Air, which can be download from their site. Flight instructors may be identified by a flight instructor name tag.

Enrollment
Flight instruction is a service that is one of the many benefits of being a LFE member. Enrollment in the LFE Flight Training Program is easy. You must be a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the Livermore Flying Electrons. See "Join LFE" on our home page for details. Then contact the Chief Flight Instructor, Eric Helms for assignment to a flight instructor. It must be stressed that our training staff is a dedicated group of individuals who volunteer their time, helping others acquire the skills to pilot their RC aircraft. There are always more students than instructors, so instructor time is valuable. You will find them friendly and helpful, but they are not there to rebuild your airplane. Beginners are expected to attend the ground school early and seek building help during non-flying hours. Normal instruction is on weekend mornings, but the student may arrange other times directly with his assigned instructor. The student is required to confirm the lesson time prior to the appointment. Failure to do so may result in being placed at the back of the waiting line. Simple courtesy goes a long way; manage your volunteer instructor's time wisely and efficiently.

Ground School
In addition to flight training, the club offers a ground school. Beginners are STRONGLY encouraged to enroll early in this important class which is the result of years of RC flight experience. Individuals attending the ground school typically progress through the training program at an accelerated rate compared to those who do not attend. Ground school covers the basic mechanics of flight, radio systems, engines & maintenance, airframes, terminology, support equipment, preventive and corrective maintenance, training syllabus, and other related items. The scope of the class is designed for the individual who is just starting out or reentering the hobby with the majority of the activity being hands-on. Recognizing that most mishaps are the consequence of errors BEFORE take-off, the course stresses topics relating to the airworthiness of your aircraft. Also covered are building tips and tricks not typically found in the "instruction book". Approximately, 3 hours in length, the class is a benefit offered on an appointment basis only. Contact the Chief Flight Instructor to arrange a time.

Flight Proficiency Solo
At the end of your primary flight training you will be given a Flight Proficiency Solo Test. This will include aircraft inspection procedures, LFE Rules and Regulations, pre-flight check, and solo flight stressing the safe handling of your aircraft. Upon completion, you will be awarded the LFE Solo Certificate and granted full membership flight privileges along with the knowledge that you have achieved one of the most rewarding goals of a lifetime.

Club Training Equipment
The club currently maintains a small fleet of training aircraft and equipment available for use by students under the supervision of a club instructor. Typically, the club aircraft are only used during the first few lessons while the student is building his/her own trainer. or that rare occasion when his/her aircraft is undergoing repairs. Club trainers are limited in availability, requiring the student to make arrangements with their instructor well in advance to secure their use for that lesson. Students are expected to provide their own fuel and propellers when the club equipment is utilized. The club is always accepting donations of training equipment to support this activity. Donations may be tax deductible.
